Ask Lisa: May

Dear Dr. Lisa,

Enough is enough. I feel like every news source I go to is talking about things getting better and then a story comes out that talks about some case that tragically details how someone has died. I don’t know where to turn and not sure what sources to believe anymore. Can you give any suggestions on how to manage the mixed messages?

Frustrated Dad

Dear Frustrated Dad,

I am so sorry to hear that you are frustrated with all of the various media coverage that is filtering in. I have to actually agree that it is very confusing, and even say it can be terrifying at times. I think we all have to remember that they are in the business to sell their stories and the most severe stories are the ones that catch our attention.

One of the first things I would suggest is to reduce the amount of content you take in. It is all confusing right now because the media is reporting as information comes in. There is a lot of bad information and scientifically there are findings daily. Take a break, pull back and just pick one source to check in on occasion.

Second, I would like to remind you that it is normal to have feelings of frustration, anxiety, anger, etc. There is so much fluctuation and uncertainty right now, it is hard on everyone. Trying to find a new normal and manage your own reactions are hard. Keep working on your patience and try to show compassion for everyone and yourself.

Best of luck,

Dr. Lisa
